Call to Worship – Joshua Chiang/Alan Ng

(Exodus 32, Psalm 106, Philippians 4)

Come, let us put God in the center of our lives!

We rejoice in God’s steadfast love!

Come, let our gentleness be a reflection of God’s love.

We give thanks for Christ’s enduring grace!

Come, let us lay down our burdens and worries.

We offer our needs to God in prayer.

Come, let us focus on what is honorable and true.

With hope, we turn now to God’s guiding word.

And may God give you peace that passes all understanding;
May Christ Jesus guard your hearts and minds;
And may the Holy Spirit plant within you

PRAYER

Most Holy God,

  to cloud our vision and faith.

Do not think on these things, gracious God.

Find in us all that is honorable and true,

  commendable and excellent.

Shine in our lives,

  that we may reflect the just and righteous parts

of ourselves.

Forgive us when we reflect false gods or sinful

values.

Guide us back into your holy presence

  and transform us with your grace,

  that we may be the gentle and just people

  you would have us be and become.  Amen.

O Lord, you are God.
There is no other God but you.
We renounce all that we have allowed
to come between us.
O Lord, we worship you.
We praise and honor your name.
We worship you on this, your holy day.
For your love, for your word,
for all that you have given:
O Lord, we thank you and praise you.
We love you.

Go now in the righteousness of faith
and live by God’s just demands.
Let nothing claim your devotion above the Lord,
and count nothing of value above knowing Christ.
Let us press on towards the ultimate prize, of being one with him.
And may God’s perfect word revive your soul;
May Christ Jesus be your saviour and your rock;
And may the Holy Spirit strengthen you to press ever onward.
We go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
.In the name of Christ. Amen.

WELCOME
The church at Moulmein welcomes all to the assembly this morning. We worship here every Sunday to praise and thank God who empowers us to bless others just as He has blessed us.

TODAY’S WORSHIP THEME
God’s discipline allows us to share in his holiness.

PRAYER
No matter how righteous
we imagine ourselves to be, Lord,
your perfect word reveals our imperfections
all too clearly.
No matter how hard we strive
to fulfill the requirements of your law,
we always fall short.
We have forgotten that righteousness and perfection
come not from rules and regulations
but from faith.
We have ignored the truth that your righteousness
comes from faith.
Open our eyes to see that all we have accomplished
is nothing compared to knowing Christ
as our Lord.
Let us count everything as loss,
that we might gain heaven
and be found blameless in Christ.
In the name of the Savior we pray. Amen.

GREAT CHILDREN’S DAY
What an amazing Children’s Day celebration we had last Sunday! Help us fully embrace your surprises,

even as we revel in the joy

WORSHIP ORDER

Call to Worship – Peter Lee

 (Psalm 105:1–4)

O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name,

make known his deeds among the peoples.

Sing to him, sing praises to him;

tell of all his wonderful works.

Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

Seek the LORD and his strength;

seek his presence continually.

Commission & Benediction Edwin

 Go now secure in the love of God

from which nothing can separate you.
Delight in seeking the Lord -
let us look always for the power and the presence of God,
and let love, like yeast in dough, permeate all we do.
And may God work for good in all things for you;
May Christ Jesus conform you in the image of his love;
And may the Holy Spirit help you in your weakness,
interceding for you, and in you, according to the will of God.

We go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
.In the name of Christ. Amen.

WELCOME

Welcome to the assembly this morning. If this is your first visit here, we hope you will find it meaningful.

TODAY’S WORSHIP THEME

Life in God’s kingdom is the greatest treasure we can possess.

 PRAYER

God of the ages,

we are waiting: waiting for grace,

waiting for peace, waiting for love,

waiting for your realm.

Patient and loving God,

strengthen our faith,

that our waiting may be transformed

into hope and action.

Help us be people who know how to wait

  with hope and expectation.

Help us be people who trust your promise

  and your purpose for our lives,

  not only in this time of worship,

  but in the days and weeks and years to come. Amen.

 NEW BIBLE CLASS SERIES SIGN UP

The new bible class series begins on 14 Aug.  You can register for the classes on the notice board from this week.

DO JUSTICE (Mark McCurley)

Both Old & New Testament make the case that God’s heart for justice on behalf of widows, orphans, immigrants, and the poor is indisputable, and that an encounter with grace will inevitably lead to a desire for justice.   Gospel preaching that aims only to change hearts while remaining oblivious to unjust social structures will never fully succeed.

LOVE MERCY (Tat Chuan)

Why would someone risk his safety, destroy his schedule, and become dirty and bloody to help a needy person of another race and social class? And why would Jesus tell us “Go and do likewise”? Like the wounded man on the Jericho road, there are needy people in our path — the widow next door, the family strapped with medical bills, the homeless man outside our place of worship.

God calls us to be ministers of mercy to people in need of shelter, assistance, medical care, or just friendship.

 WALK HUMBLY (Dave Hogan)

A battle rages within every one of us every day. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without Him. It’s pride versus humility. And it’s a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross.  This series raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility).

 ON THE MOVE

Our warm welcome to the Hogans:

    – Dave & Debbie who are back from their                    hectic home leave

– Gordan & Jane who are visiting us

A group of 12 — Dave, Debbie, Gordon, Jane, Edwin, Tommy, Yuhan, Sue Ann, Mark, Karen, Berkeley and Paige — will leave for Chiangmai on Friday to attend the Asian Mission Forum.  A record 250 participants have registered for the forum.

 LET’S PRAY FOR

Sis Kwai Yuong as she completes her last session of chemotherapy this week.  Let’s pray for full healing.  We appreciate all who have shown love and support during this difficult time.  Also pray for Christopher whose mother is undergoing surgery for colon cancer.  It is a very trying period for him.  But God’s mercy is everlasting.

Joan German who underwent hip surgery at TTSH the past week as a result of a fall.  She is from New Zealand and is here for a holiday with her husband, Richard.  They will remain here till she is well enough to return home.  They are friends of Gordon Hogan from the church in Tuaranga.

Yuxiang who is on an internship in Turkey for the World Wide Witness programme organised by ACU.

Yuhan who is in Cambodia with NUS.

your love binds us together.

your love binds us together.

Bind us together, O Lord.

And may God bless you with life forever;
May Christ Jesus heal you of all that would harm you;
And may the Holy Spirit cleanse your hearts

of all that would defile you.

We go in peace to love and serve the Lord,

WELCOME

The church at Moulmein welcomes all to the assembly this morning.  We worship here every Sunday to praise and thank God who empowers us to bless others just as He has blessed us.

TODAY’S WORSHIP THEME

Confessing Jesus as Lord produces a transformation in our lives.

 PRAYER

Loving God,

  call us together as your people;

  transform us with your love.

Transform our hearts,

  that we may love generously.

Transform our eyes,

  that we may see your grace.

Transform our hands,

  that we may serve others.

Transform our spirits,

  that we may be the body of Christ,

  gathered to worship

  and sent out to serve. Amen.

WONDERFUL SPIRIT

Last Sunday we experienced a wonderful spirit of unity and love in honoring our pioneers – Gordon and Jane Hogan – who has blessed us with their dedication and service.  In honoring our pioneers, we learnt the importance of respecting and appreciating what the previous generation has done for the kingdom.  We are really blessed by the entire Hogan family at Moulmein.

There is certainly greater appreciation for the pioneers among our young now.  God be praised for such wonderful spirit in the church.

CHURCH PHOTO

We had fun taking a congregational photo last Sunday.  Not only was the turn-out great, it was significant to have the photo with Gordon and Jane Hogan.  This might be their last trip to Singapore in view of Jane’s heart condition.  But she certainly looks great on this trip and is also her usual self — always cheerful and spritely.

NEW BIBLE CLASS SERIES

The three new Bible classes – Walk Humbly, Love Mercy and Do Justice – will start officially next Sunday. We will have brief introduction to the three different classes today so that you can make an informed decision. For even distribution, each class will be limited to 20 people.  Once the limit is reached, you will have to sign up for the other classes unless they are all filled too.

 CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

The youth and young adults are starting their Christmas musical rehearsal today.  They would like to recruit a few adults for some roles in the performance. The commitment will be around once a month from now until November with more frequent practices in December.

 The last Easter drama conveyed the message of God’s transforming love very powerfully and we are working together closely for this musical to reach out to more people this Christmas.

PRAYERS NEEDED FOR.…

 The church as we seek to learn what Walking Humbly, Loving Mercy and Doing Justice means.

 Children’s Ministry as they step out in faith to organise a VBS for 80 kids when we have only 40 at church.  Let’s pray that this year’s VBS will be filled to capacity and that many volunteers will step forward to fill the roles needed.

Youth/Young Adults Ministry that their creative energies and hard work will reach out to many at this year end’s Christmas musical.

That the Moulmein church will seek actively to be good news in our community.

HONORING OUR PIONEERS

The church at Moulmein is deeply grateful to Gordon and Jane Hogan for pioneering the missionary work in Singapore.  Bro Hogan has since a young man of 31 years set his heart on missions and ever since then worked resolutely for the cause of the kingdom.

His missionary zeal led him first to Pakistan in 1960 and then to Singapore in1968 at a time when the church was in turmoil.  From a congregation of 8 members including his family, the church at Moulmein grew to be a most missional congregation – planting churches, providing infra-structure support, equipping and providing for full time ministers.

Bro Hogan encouraged groups of people from Moulmein to move out and start new congregations.  He often urged Moulmein to give away everything she has to support the Lord’s work in the region.  Moulmein acquired the property and built the Jurong building (1974).  Moulmein also led the way in raising two million dollars for the Bedok building project (much of it contributed by the congregation, from 1983 for almost a decade).

Gordon’s tireless efforts in missions and fund raising had made it possible for members to not only start new churches in Jurong and AMK, but also supported ministers like Francis Pavlas,  Eddie Ee, John Lachmana, Frank Leong, Richard Loh, Andrew Ng, Chang Chee Wee, Foo Sek San, Eric Tan and Edwin Choy.

His faith and commitment is inspiring and worth emulating. Hence, we want to honor Gordon and Jane for giving the best years of their lives to the kingdom.

 CHURCH PHOTO

We will be taking a group picture as a church today.

 TEA IN HONOUR OF THE HOGANS

As part of our celebration to honor our pioneers, Gordon and Jane, tea will be provided today.

 NEW BIBLE CLASS SERIESThe three new Bible classes – Walk Humbly, Love Mercy and Do Justice – will start next Sunday.  Today we will have a brief introduction to the 3 different classes to help you make an informed choice of what you want to study.

 LEAVING US

The Hogans (Gordon & Jane) will be leaving Singapore early Monday morning for the US. We thank them for being with us and will always cherish many fond memories of them.

 Also returning to US is Xiang Xiang who will resume her studies at ACU after spending summer in Turkey on the World Wide Witness programme.

 CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

The youth and young adults will be starting their Christmas outreach rehearsal next Sunday, 21 August. They would like to recruit a few adults for the play. The rehearsals will be held once a month and will be more frequent in December. If you are interested, please let Sue Ann know by this week as the cast would like to begin rehearsals next week.
